The Harley Davidson Motorcycle company has opened what is only its second store in mainland China, in the city of Shanghai. However, the invasion of the Harley Davidson motorcycle, with its attendant culture of passion, freedom and speed may face significant hurdles in China due to the laws banning motorcycles in some cities. For instance, Shanghai has already banned the registration of private motorcycles in 2002. The Harley Davidson motorcycle sold in Shanghai may only be ridden outside the city's Outer Ring Road, and riders of the Harley Sportster and other models will have to register their motorcycles in Beijing. Like the 1,300 other dealers who sell the Harley Davidson motorcycle in over 60 different countries, the Shanghai store also sells various styles of the Harley jacket and Harley Davidson parts accessories. It remains to be seen however, if the Harley Davidson motorcycle can make serious inroads into the Chinese market because of the aforementioned rules against registering Harleys in Shanghai, and because Chinese air pollution laws will become increasingly stringent in the future as the air quality in the major cities worsens.
