Even though people who ride the Harley Davidson motorcycle have sometimes inspired fear in their neighbors, there are many other Harley Davidson motorcycle riders and clubs who are just friendly and public-spirited as the mildest Shriner or Rotarian. A case in point, in a story reported in the New Bern, North Carolina Sun-Journal on November 24th, a group of 600 motorcyclists, many of the astride a Harley Davidson motorcycle as well as Hondas and BMWs, rode from New Bern to the town of Kinston to deliver toys and money for the children of a local orphanage. The group of mostly Harley Davidson motorcycle riders were led by a rider dressed as Santa. "Santa" was quoted as saying, "“We feel a little bit guilty with this because it’s for the kids, but it makes our hearts happy,” he said before the ride. “I’m thinking we will place at least $9,000 in the hands of the orphanage by the time we leave. That’s not including the toys." The event was sponsored by the New Bern Harley Owners Group, which also raises money for food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries in the state. I'm not saying everyone who owns a Harley Davidson motorcycle is a good citizen, but stories like this warm my heart.
