In a story posted on Washingtonpost.com, it was reported that four senators have stepped up to the plate to support the Harley Davidson motorcycle company in China. At issue are China's unfair trade practices, which have accounted for the lackluster sales of Harley Davidson motorcyle products in China. With its huge population, vast distances and incredibly crowded big cities, China would seem like a natural market for the Harley Davidson motorcycle, yet the American motorcycle company has struggled against Chinese trade barriers. As the Post article noted, ""The Chinese market should be a hog heaven for U.S. motorcycle companies, but China's unfair trade practices are slamming the brakes on Harley sales," Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, said in a statement ahead of high-level U.S.-China talks next week in Beijing. "Fair trade must be a two-way street," said Sen. Robert Casey, a Pennsylvania Democrat. "China's roadblock to Harley- Davidson is unacceptable. There will always be a demand for a classic like (a) Harley Davidson motorcycle, but artificial barriers are threatening U.S. jobs." With powerful senators like Schumer and Casey in its corner, it is hoped that Harley Davidson motorcycle can increase its presence in China and expand in the coming decade.
